Holiday Cheer

Had some fun with our sign out front this morning...

After-Holiday Sale

OK, we know Chanukah is still going on and Christmas and Kwanzaa haven't even come yet and we're not even sure when Festivus starts and ends, but we're starting our After-Holiday Sale early - mostly so we don't have to come in just to post a sale during our own holiday celebration at home.

So now through whenever we decide it's time to stop, we've got our sale going on. We're doing something a little different on this sale so be sure to read it carefully. Unfortunately, there are always exclusions...

We Want Your Swag!

After receiving a whole box full of awesome club swag from the CNYJEP club this morning, I thought it would be fun to decorate our showroom with club swag from around the country.

So, send us some good swag and we'll dust you back. Decals, hats, shirts, whatever you have. We'll send out bunches o' stickers from our shop and if you send some really cool stuff, we'll send you a t-shirt, too :)

Yeah, we're sort of begging for swag, but hey, y'all do it to us all the time, right? :) Besides, it's all in the name of good 4x4 spirit!

WARNing! We just got notice from Warn that they will begin a Minimum Advertised Price policy on January 1, 2009. This will most likely mean a price increase of just about everything we sell. We do not have details yet, but we are very competitive on the line, so we have reason to believe that our prices will go up at that time.

Yay Phillies! Boo Philly!

I am very excited that the Phillies won the World Series this week. I grew up at Veteran's Stadium. We had season tickets for the Phillies and the Eagles, as well as the Flyers and '76ers, who played at the nearby Spectrum back in those days. It's been ages since my personal exodus from Philly but I'll never forget some of the great sports moments my Dad and I shared there.

We were there in 1976 for the MLB All Star Game. Sure, we were just under the scoreboard in center field in the bleachers, but we were there and I still have the program to prove it. We were there when the '76ers won in 1983. Just don't rat me out for skipping school to go to the victory parade, ok?

But the one I remember most is when the Phillies won the series in 1980. I'll never forget ol' Tugger and his mit bouncing off of his leg after striking out Willie Wilson with the bases loaded to win the series.

One thing that always comes to mind when recalling these moments is the crowds. Broad Street was always awash with crazed, drunken mobs after the games. If you were smart, you didn't park your car in a major aisle of the parking lot and if you had more than one car, you took the one you cared least about - just in case.

So why bring all this up? Because a guy named Ted Passon had the misfortune of parking his car in the wrong place Wednesday night. The mob hit the street and turned Ted's '89 Gallant over on its back. Lame! Ted's a videographer and did not have enough insurance to cover the damage on the car (vandalism) and AAA wouldn't cover the wrecker to come out and flip it over (causing even more damage to the car).

Anyway, Ted's started a blog of his own, both calling out the thugs that turned over his wheels and also asking for donations to help him repair his chariot. You can check the site out here.

Now I know if this guy had a Jeep or other 4x4 you guys would be all over it, but maybe you still want to help out somehow.

Regardless, I'm thinking what a fabulous PR opportunity this could be for the Phillies ball club and their major sponsors. Are you listening guys?

What? Another Move?

Yes, it was just 13 months ago that we moved into our shop here in Chelsea, Alabama. Well, it seems that we're going to move again next month! Not far, though, just about 100 feet. The building next to ours has become available and we are planning on moving as soon as we make the alterations to the building. Very exciting! We'll have double the space there and great visibility from the street. It's definitely a future-positive move as we struggle to survive in this awful economy. But we're having faith and doing it anyway. :)

Be a Motorsports Video HERO!

Man is this thing cool! Ever want to shoot your own driving videos? You know, hang a camera off the side of the rig and hit the trails, all the while shooting your monster mudders climbing over the big rocks?

Or maybe you're more of the renegade biker type who likes to blaze through town at 3am and put it on YouTube?

Regardless of what you're into, the new GoPro HERO is right up your alley. We've got them in stock in both the normal 54 degree version and also the 170 degree wide angle version. These things are way cool. We found a 2GB SD memory card for under 12 bucks this morning and it will hold almost an hour of 30fps video!

The HEROs come with a super sucker windshield mount and lots of extra mounts so you can put the camera in different places - even your helmet! Oh yeah, and even a waterproof enclosure!

We shot a 12 minute driving video today that was about 450MB. We then converted it down to 70MB and then uploaded it to www.rockcrawlertv.com to check the quality. It's still darned good, even after 2 down-converts. Sweet!

These are ready to ship now!
Standard HERO - $179.95 Free Shipping
Wide Angle HERO - $199.95 Free Shipping

Another One Bites the Dust

Argh! Another great company has bitten the dust. This week it's Poison Spyder Customs. It's a real shame to lose these guys. We were one of their very first dealers when Clifton Slay started up his company.

While the road to growth had not been smooth and delivery times suffered, we stood by Poison Spyder because of their great products.

Unfortunately, it seems the economy and the general off-road market environment was not kind to them and they have discontinued their entire product line, except for their beadlock wheels, chassis and apparel.

We'll miss you guys. :(

If you'd like to know more, you can read a thread started by Clifton Slay here.

Bikers for Babies Follow-Up

Well, the ride was a great success! I raised lots of money for march of dimes and had a great day on the bike. My tour for the day was just over 350 miles! My back side's a little sore but it was all worth it.

While I was there I met Dee Snider, who is one of the celebrity spokespersons. I asked him what his connection was other than he's a biker and thought it was a good cause. It turns out that two of his four kids spent time in NICU when they were born. Both made it out alive.

I told him he was fortunate, as my son did not and showed him my helmet. On it I painted "Today I ride for Daniel. June 3-16, 2003"

He was definitely moved by it and was happy to pose for the photo you see here. Thanks for all you're doing Dee.

In case you missed it, my fundraising page is still ongoing here.

More on Pies... and Recycling

OK, for the last time, here's another plug for my pie-making skills. Yes, I'm a "Renaissance Man." Just ask the Shelby County Reporter. Read all about it here.

Anyway, today, the newspaper was here again to shoot still another story with me in it. Boy am I getting popular! So I figured I ought to clean up the joint a little bit. Part of that was taking out the recycling.

Our town, Chelsea, Alabama, has a gigantic recycling bin at City Hall for us all to use. Too bad we don't get curb-side pickup, bet at least we can recycle our paper, cardboard and cans, right? I'm happy to do it even if means having to pack it all up and take it down the road.

Today was the day an since it's so beautiful out, I decided I'd take the Scrambler. I do wish Jeep still made something like the Scrambler because they were just so darned handy...

All Hail The Pie King!

Just thought I'd share a little bit of some personal news. This last week we spent almost every night manning our booth at the Shelby County Fair, here in Columbiana, Alabama. Now if you ain't from around here, the county fair is the real deal. We're not just talkin' rides, games and greasy food. Oh, no, the county fair's got exhibits and competitions for everything from livestock to canning to quilts to photography and, my favorite, baked goods.

Since last year, I sort of joked about entering a pie in the county fair. I mean, really, though, could a Jeep shop owner actually stand a chance against seasoned white-haired ladies?

I decided to find out.

So, last Sunday I spent about five hours baking pies. I entered an apple pie and a pumpkin pie. Judging was on Monday - the first day of the fair.

I won...twice!

That's right, this ol' grease monkey took 2nd place for my apple pie and 3rd place for my pumpkin pie.

Oh, and as a bonus, our booth with my Jeep in it, took a 3rd place ribbon, too!

Yes, that's right, he can build a 4x4, chain saw a tree or bake a really yummy pie.

Oh We're Media Nerds Today

Today, we bring you two very exciting glimpses into the world of 4x4ROCKSHOP. That's right!

First up is a webcam we're testing out. You'll have to use Internet Explorer and download a quick little plug-in but it only takes a minute. Sometimes you'll find something interesting - other times you may just see an empty counter, a dark shop or our hummingbird feeder. It's pot luck. I'll try not to do anything obscene when I walk by. Check it out here.

The other is our new commercial that was shot to air on our local high school team's football replays they show on cable tv. Yes, football's that big around here that they play the high school games on tv!

It's fun and will give you a little idea of what the shop is like.

New 6" Rough Country Kits for Jeep JK

Just announced this morning, Rough Country has a brand-spakin' new 6" kit for you Jeep JK guys. Will a full bevy of control arms and bracketry, this looks to be a pretty complete kit.

We also like the bump stops they are using on their shocks here to defend against over-compression. Nice touch.

Note that at this time, the 2 door models will ship with 4" springs up front and 2" spacers, while the 4 door models (pictured) will get 6" springs. Both get 6" springs in the rear.

Rough Country is also partnering with Tom Wood for driveshafts for the kit so there are part #'s for easy ordering.

You can check out the kits here.

March of Dimes Ride

Because of my own experience with premature birth, I am a big supporter of the march of dimes. So, each year, when the Off Camber 4WD club, based in Georgia, has their fund raising event at Morris Mountain ORV Park, we are proud to participate.

This year's event was a great success, even given today's economic climate. 92 rigs were registered and nearly 700 raffle tickets were purchased, resulting in a $3200 donation. Well-done!

We were happy to donate a bunch of goodies for the raffle and everyone seemed to appreciate them. We also had a blast riding the trails, meeting new 'wheelers and watching the caos that ensued during the competition.

If you're in the area next summer, be sure to look up this event.

Swift Hitch - Magnetic Spotter Anyone?

OK so there's this gadget called the Swift Hitch. Very cool. Essentially, it's a magnetic camera that wirelessly sends it's color signal to a hand-held receiver. It's intention is to make hooking up a trailer by yourself simple. Just pop it on the tailgate and back up, drop the trailer on the ball and you're good to go.

But it occurred to me - wouldn't this make a great magnetic spotter? I mean, stick it on the front bumper and you can see what's ahead. Or stick it on the back - whatever.

I intend to try this out this weekend myself on the trails.

Anyway, they are in stock and we have a very substantial instant discount on them once you add them to the cart, so have a look!

New Rough Country TJ Kit

Interesting new kit for you TJ guys wanting to run 31's (or 32's with a body lift) from Rough Country. While most "budget boosts" are 2 inch (ok, really 1.75"), this kit is 2.5" and uses springs instead of spacers to achieve the lift. In addition, it uses jounce bumpers on the shocks to act as bump stops. The kit also uses different front springs, depending on the engine onboard. Nice.

Anyway, the kit's set at an intro price of $299.95 plus just a wee bit of shipping (they don't allow free shipping) and it's available now. This is a brand new kit on the market. My personal assumption is a rear trackbar bracket may be needed, though they don't mention it in their own materials.

Gone Wheelin'

We're outta here. Mike's out west with HUMMER checking out the new H3T pickup so he shut the joint down for a couple days. But don't fear, we'll still probably offer better customer service and response times than a lot of shops out there - even on the road!

Yes, Mike may be gone, but he's always got that blasted Blackberry in his pocket, ready to answer emails as they come in. OK, well, he will be on airplanes or on the trails in the mountains, but rest assured, he'll answer as soon as he can.

All orders received will be processed on Monday. First in, first out.

Oh yeah, may as well throw a coupon code out there for y'all.

Coupon code is SIERRA. Use it on the cart page when you check out to save 5% off your order. Now, as always, there will be exceptions due to either dealer agreements or too too low margins. If you use it on something not eligible, it will not be honored.

The envelope, please...
Exclusions: Edge, MSD, Superchips, Rubicon Express, JKS, Poison Spyder, Shrockworks, BesTop, winches, combo deals, financed deals or packages including tires & wheels, freight, gift certificates, previously-negotiated deals, sales or backorders.

Help Recycle and Quench Your Thirst

We do a lot of recycling here at the shop. When we can, we re-use shipping boxes to send out packages. So, for example, don't be surprised if you get a box that says "Frozen Waffles, Keep Cool" on it or it may have a big ol' Amazon smiley logo on it.

We also use recyclable packing materials whenever we can, such as paper. We're not fans of packing peanuts but we do use them sometimes for fragile items like glasses or lights. We never ever buy them. We re-use what we get in boxes sent to us.

We do sometimes use plastic air pillows or bubble wrap, but again, only if we got them in the first place from someone else.

In the shop, here, we also recycle paper, cardboard, and plastic bottles. My employees think I'm nuts sometimes when I scream "No! That goes in the white bin in the back!" but I can take the heat.

Every couple weeks I load up the truck and haul it off to our local drop-off center and cut and stuff it all into tiny holes in the bin. It's hard work but it's important to me.

One other thing that is important is recycling your printer's ink cartridges and dead cell phone batteries. Not everyone likes to bother with it so for you local folks, we're bribing you to do it. If you drop off either one here, we'll give you a free can of soda or a bottle of water to cool off and quench your thirst. Then we'll deal with getting them recycled in bulk. If you bring in 3 or more, we'll even fork over a free bottle or can of NOS Energy Drink. Such a deal!

Also for you local people, come by this Saturday for our open house between 10am and 2pm. We'll probably have hot dogs, drinks, and all that stuff.

For those of you needing Dana 44 axle shafts for your Jeeps, Alloy USA shafts are in stock and ready to ship. If you need them assembled, we'll need a little time but we can do that, too.

Aluminum Customs Cyclone Hood Panel Insert

TJ engines run hot. Add in summer's high temperatures, crawling on the trails or sitting in traffic and you have a recipe for overheating. The solution? The Aluminum Customs Cyclone Hood Panel Insert.

This is a simple install. The hardest part is gathering up the gumption to cut the holes in your hood! But once you make that first cut, the rest is easy. :)

At $194.95 with FREE SHIPPING, this should really be a great boost in air flow and actually looks pretty cool. Oh, and of course, it's paintable if you don't like the raw aluminum look.

UNICHIP - BIG Price Increase Coming

If you want some big time gains in power, you need to check out UNICHIP. We carry the whole lineup but right now we only have Jeep TJ and JK models on our site, because we're expecting a very significant price increase in the next week or two ($100 or more is what we're told).

If you're considering one of these units, buy now! Seriously! Also, we can tune them for your specific setup, for example, 07 Jeep JK with a Volant intake and a catback. Just let us know what you've got and we'll get you rockin'.

Check out our very excellent pricing with FREE SHIPPING here.

The Rockshop Rockies

In the spirit of all things Spring and community involvement, we're so very proud to be sponsoring the Chelsea Youth League 7/8 year old Rockies baseball team.

I went out to watch the boys play last night and I was very impressed with them. They can hit, they can throw, and darnit if they aren't just so much fun to watch.

Over the years I grew tired of the major leagues. It seems their motivation isn't so much the game anymore. I enjoy seeing our local Birmingham Barons minor team play much more. And now, I can enjoy these little guys playing the game they love so much and having tons of fun on the diamond because they want to play ball. They looked so excited to be out there and they all have full uniforms and a great field to play on. Boy, we were lucky to get t-shirts some years when I played, let alone have manicured fields, score boards and functional helmets!

Anyway, you looked good out their kids. Have fun! We're proud to have our name on your shirts!

JKS Grants Us Our Wish!

JKS has always made a great tie rod for the Jeep TJ/XJ/ZJ. But we always wanted something a little thicker, and oh - you know - already black so we didn't have to paint the darned thing. It was always hard to sell a guy with a taco'd tie rod a new one, then tell him, by the way, you have to paint it first before you put it on."

So I just got off the phone with Jim Nollette, owner of JKS. He told me he now has the NEW TR100 ready to ship. It's 1 1/4" thick .375" DOM tubing and... it's powdercoated black! Hurray!

OK, the photo over there on the right is actually the old one and just look how pretty it is sitting there, wit its nice wrench-flat for easy adjustments and those gorgeous jam nuts... ah... takes your breath away doesn't it? Now imagine that, only fatter and powdercoated black. Yeah, baby!

Have we got you rev'd up yet? I hope so. Oh, here's the best part, we've got them for a mere $89.95 with FREE SHIPPING! That's $5.05 off of retail and we're eating your freight.

You're still reading. Why are you still here? Go order a new tie rod!

Interesting Column in Money Magazine

I read an interesting column from Jean Chatzky this morning that I thought I'd link to here. It's about what your time is worth and how that relates to shopping around for the best price on things.

I feel like the pricing here at our shop is extremely competitive in most cases. Once in a while our customers dig up a lower price somewhere and ask us to match it and when we can, we do, most of the time. But what that tells me is that if people want to buy it here in the first place, then our shop must have something they like better than the other places. Is it the name? The store? Me? Our service? Who knows.

Anyway, check out Jean's article. It's interesting because sometimes I think this way. I don't always price shop everything I buy. You can drive yourself nuts doing it and it's a waste of time if you already know where you want to buy it from in the first place. Build a relationship with your sales people at the stores you like and it'll always pay off. Sometimes by saving you money. Sometimes by saving you time and aggravation. Sometimes it's intangible.

OK, there's my thought for today.

Tickle Tickle Prod Prod

OK kids we all keep hearing about impending economic doom, right? Everyone says sales are down, nobody's spending money, yada yada yada. Well here's a thought.

THINK FOR YOURSELF! Stop listening to the media talking heads. They are the source of the problem. If they keep convincing us on a daily basis that the economy is going down the tubes, guess what - it will. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. So first of all, stop watching the news, ok?

OK here's another one, the solution to a problem, if one really does exist, starts with you! If we all hoard our cash then nobody makes money and we all head down that tube again. If you don't buy that Starbucks coffee, they lay employees off. They also buy less milk for their lattes so the cows also get laid off and the truckers that deliver it and everyone else in the chain.

So here's my thought for today, go tickle and the prod the economy. Go buy that $3 cup o' Joe or that Playstation3 you've been wanting or, ahem, that new set of tires for your truck.

While an "Economic Stimulus Package" is nice, the real prodding is to you, the consumer, to loosen that wallet up and spend some money. I truly believe if we all stop listening to the doom and gloom and act normally, we'll all be just fine. Turn off the news!

Top Truck Challenge - Vote For Rob!

Many of you may be aware ofthe Four Wheeler Magazine Top Truck Challenge that's held each year in Hollister, California. We just got a call from one of our customers, Rob Murphy, who is in this year's running.

Rob's been buying parts from us since 2004 and now has his own shop, Mountain Valley Customs, in Milford, Pennsylvania. When he first started building his Jeep TJ, he lived in Alaska and we were continually shipping his parts all the way up there. We thought he was crazy!

Well now he's in lower 48 and his Jeep rocks! Pick up the latest issue of Four Wheeler and give Rob a vote. He's a hard working guy with a great Jeep and he's ready to hit the rocks!

A Rocky Business Model

That's what the Shelby County Reporter called their article about us in today's edition. Honestly, sometimes I think the same thing! I mean, let's face it, we don't exactly sell things people need, right? So when times are hard like now with the economy, guys like us have to hunker down a bit and remember why we got into this business in the first place - because we love Jeeps, trucks, off-roading and the great outdoors.

Samantha Hurst nailed it in the article (and proved she was listening) when she wrote, "'It was an immediate love affair with this area,' Cohn said. 'The county roads go on for miles and miles, and the scenery is great.'"

Even when I'm working and I'm on the road, I'm still out in the country and dealing with real-life people who enjoy what life has to offer and live it through their vehicles. Of course, it's not always a bowl of cherries, but what we do here really is satisfying and when a customer writes me or tells me on the phone or in our store that they are happy and love what we've helped them accomplish - well, that just puts a big smile on my face.

RealWheels Now Available

Is bling your thing? Well, if so, we've got the entire RealWheels lineup for Jeep JKs online now. We spent most of our day doing it, so at least have a look, ok?

Seriously, though, RWC has some pretty nice stuff for the new Jeeps, available in Stainless or billet aluminum. The billet stuff is available either powder coated black or in RealGloss finish, which looks just like chrome but won't pit or fade and (I like this part) it's much friendlier to our environment because it doesn't require those nasty chemicals for the plating process.

Oh, I should also mention, that RWC products are Made in the USA!

While some of the parts a little over the top for my taste, I'm kind of fond of some of the black powdercoat billet pieces and we may put a few on the project JK we're about to start on.

RWC parts can all be found in the JK section of our site or by simply searching RWC.
